Voters Guide

2026 Primary Election

Our Preferences

This June, New Yorkers will vote in primary elections to choose party nominees for the New York State Legislature and New York State Comptroller, as well as federal, judicial, and party positions. With an unusual number of open seats across the ballot, 2026 stands out as one of the most consequential primary seasons in recent memory. Retirements, challenges, and reshuffling have created opportunities for new leadership across the City, making the choices voters make this year especially significant. In a city and state still navigating fiscal pressures and a shifting federal landscape, it is essential that our elected representatives strengthen our democracy, deliver ethical leadership, and carry forward the cause of meaningful reform.

Since 1910, Citizens Union has evaluated local candidates for elected office and backed those who strongly support and can advance our agenda for reform. This year, with so many open races on the table, our members worked harder than ever, interviewing 40 candidates across the city. The races featured in this guide are all Democratic primaries, as there were no notable, competitive Republican primaries in New York City this spring. We’re proud to support a slate of candidates committed to fair and open elections and honest and accountable governance. You can find our picks and rankings for the 2026 Primary Election below, along with a writeup on each candidate. Citizens Union’s preference in the race for New York City Comptroller will be announced separately next week.
