As senator, Addabbo has a record of support for redistricting and election reform

Peter J.W. Sherwin, Chair of the Board of Directors and Dick Dadey, Executive Director today announced the endorsement of Senator Joseph Addabbo, Jr. from Queens for re-election to Senate District 15 over challenger Councilmember Eric Ulrich.

Sherwin said, “Queens residents have an important and difficult choice between two appealing candidates in the contest for Senate District 15.  Citizens Union likes both candidates, having supported them at various points in the past but has never had to choose between these two admirable public officials. In the end, CU decided to support the incumbent, Senator Joseph Addabbo, Jr., whom we have supported before for this specific office.  His clear support for second passage of the constitutional amendment on redistricting, his record of working collaboratively for reform in Albany, and his effective service as past chair of the senate elections committee fighting for needed election reform were critical components of our decision to endorse him.”

Citizens Union further believes Senator Addabbo understands the issues that plague governance in Albany and is a firm supporter of giving minority parties and rank-and-file members more influence in decision making.

Dick Dadey, executive director, said, “Eric Ulrich is an impressive elected official who has already achieved much in his short and notable political career through his bipartisan approach to tackling issues in the City Council.  If elected to the state senate, he would serve as a strong advocate within the Republican Conference on issues of political reform and issues facing New York City. We appreciate his support, for example, for a public matching campaign finance system based on his own positive experiences using the system as a candidate for the Council.”

Candidate questionnaires and additional candidate information from Senate District 15, as well as other state and local races will be made available online at www.citizensunion.org. Citizens Union is  publishing and mailing its Voters Directory next week in advance of the November 6th general election detailing its evaluations of all candidates it interviewed, a public education service that the organization has provided to its members since 1910.
