New York, N.Y. (September 20, 2023) — Citizens Union has issued to following statement from executive director Betsy Gotbaum in response to Governor Hochul signing a package of bills aimed at strengthening our democracy and protecting and expanding voting rights:
“We are proud to stand here today with Governor Hochul, as she signs a number of bills that strengthen our democracy. Citizens Union has long advocated for legislation that would make it easier for New Yorkers to vote by mail, and supported efforts to professionalize Boards of Elections so they can better serve voters. Additionally, streamlining voter registration and voting on the first day of the early voting period will bring more New Yorkers into the process. We thank Governor Hochul and all the bill sponsors for their work to protect and expand the right to vote.”
