New York, N.Y. (November 24, 2020)— Betsy Gotbaum, Former NYC Public Advocate and current Executive Director of Citizens Union issues the following statement on the passing of Mayor David Dinkins:

“With the passing of David Dinkins, we have lost an iconic New Yorker and a giant of our city’s public life. Mayor Dinkins was elected as New York’s first Black Mayor at a difficult time, and his administration set our city on the path to an era of prosperity and growth.”

“It was a great honor to be chosen by Mayor Dinkins to serve as Commissioner of the Parks Department. I am incredibly proud of the work we did together to make parks safer and more accessible for all New Yorkers. Mayor Dinkins and I shared a love for tennis, and thanks to his vision and hard work we were able to bring the US Tennis Center to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The US Open has become a signature event that each year generates hundreds of millions of dollars of direct economic impact for New York City — more than all other sporting events combined.”

“After leaving City Hall, Mayor Dinkins continued to support civic organizations and nonprofits because service to our city was so important to him. His presence at galas and fundraisers will be deeply missed. My thoughts today are with his family and many friends.”
