For Immediate Release
New York, N.Y. (June 24, 2024) – Citizens Union has issued the following statement from Executive Director Betsy Gotbaum in response to the candidacy of Hiram Monserrate for Assembly in Queens:
“Hiram Monserrate’s audacity in seeking election despite his criminal past is alarming. It suggests a lack of remorse and a fundamental misunderstanding of the ethical responsibilities inherent in public service. Electing a candidate with a record of violence against women and public corruption would further undermine the public’s faith in government.
“Moreover, Monserrate’s return to office would set a dangerous precedent for other politicians who might contemplate abusing their power. It would suggest that political rehabilitation is achievable without genuine atonement or reform. Tomorrow, it is vital that the voters of Queens once again reject Hiram Monserrate at the polls.”
