Gustavo Rivera has served in the state Senate since 2011, and currently chairs the Health Committee, the first senator from the Bronx to hold the position. A reformer who highlights ethics and democracy issues in his campaign platform, Rivera sponsored bills to facilitate voting, reduce the corrupting influence of money in politics, restructure the Board of Elections, and ensure accountability for officials who violate the public’s trust. He had not shied away from criticizing the county party machine or the executive chamber when he believed they abused their power, yet he has still managed to move meaningful legislation in Albany. Over 30 of his bills were signed into law – most dealing with healthcare – and passing the New York Health Act remains a top priority for him. Citizens Union supported Rivera in previous elections, and believes he will be a powerful advocate for this newly redrawn district. We prefer him in this race because of his commitment to reform, demonstrated ability to be an effective legislator, and his independent approach.
