Citizens Union finds promise in Governor Cuomo’s call today for comprehensive ethics reform to end the culture of secrecy in Albany that has fed the crime wave of corruption. In pledging today to not approve a state budget unless it contains these needed reforms, the governor laid down the gauntlet with the state legislature in seeking full disclosure of legislators’ outside income, rules that increase participation by rank and file members of the state legislature, pension revocation, and robust campaign finance reform that ends the shady practice of personal use of campaign funds.
Citizens Union is pleased to see the governor taking a strong stand to correct the misstep of closing down the Moreland Commission before its work was completed. Let’s hope that this is the time that New Yorkers see the promise of a wholesale change to Albany happen.
