New York, N.Y. (June 6, 2022) – Citizens Union releases the following statement from Executive Director Betsy Gotbaum after New York City Districting Commission Chair Dennis Walcott that draft district maps would be delayed and drawn after additional public hearings:

“The NYC Districting Commission made the right choice by delaying the publication of the draft Council district lines to allow more opportunities for the public to comment. Though over forty people testified at the citywide hearing last month, many communities have not yet engaged in the process. Gathering input from our city’s diverse communities is more important than rushing to publish new maps. However, to get broad, meaningful public input, the Commission must bolster multilingual and borough-based outreach efforts so that more New Yorkers know about these hearings.”
