New York, N.Y. (January 6, 2022) – Citizens Union releases the following statement from Executive Director Betsy Gotbaum on the one year anniversary of the insurrection at the US Capitol Building:

“One year ago today, we watched in horror as a group of insurrectionists sought to overturn the results of the Presidential election. The events of January 6th, 2021 were an attack on all Americans who exercised their right to vote, and a sobering reminder of the fragility of our democracy.”

“Citizens Union has been working for 125 years to protect and expand the right to vote while maintaining the integrity of our elections. We have seen that here in New York, we are not immune to misinformation about elections or campaigns to strip away voting rights. We must remain vigilant and work every day to preserve our democracy.”
