New York, N.Y. (January 5, 2022) – Citizens Union releases the following statement from Executive Director Betsy Gotbaum congratulating Adrienne Adams on her election as Speaker of the New York City Council:
“On behalf of Citizens Union, New York’s oldest good government group, I would like to congratulate Adrienne Adams on being elected by her peers as the next Speaker of the New York City Council. This represents a historic moment for our city, as Speaker Adams will be the first Black person to serve in this important role, and only the third woman.”
“Speaker Adams has a track record as a leader on a number of important issues, including making law enforcement more transparent and accountable. We look forward to working with her, and the entire City Council to reimagine law enforcement and public safety, increase civic engagement, ensure a fair redistricting process, and more.”
