New York, N.Y. (December 21, 2020) — Citizens Union, New York’s preeminent good government group, has issued the following statement applauding Governor Andrew Cuomo for announcing he will sign legislation bringing Automatic Voter Registration to New York State:

“In the past two years, we have seen New York State pass a number of critical, pro-democracy reforms. These reforms, including early voting, consolidating federal and local primaries, same day voter registration, no excuse absentee voting and pre-registration for 16- and 17-year olds, have already been embraced by New Yorkers.”

“Under Automatic Voter Registration, eligible citizens who interact with government agencies are automatically registered to vote or have their existing registration information updated, unless they affirmatively decline. This increases the number of voters who can participate in the electoral process, and ensures voting rolls are more accurate. This process has saved money in the states where this reform already has been implemented.”

“We applaud Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Speaker Heastie for their leadership, Senator Gianaris and Assembly Member Walker for introducing this legislation, and Governor Cuomo for signing this important bill.”
