New York, N.Y. (October 28, 2022) – Today, Citizens Union announced its endorsement of Kathy Hochul for New York State Governor. Hochul received overwhelming support among Citizens Union’s board members.

Randy Mastro, Citizens Union’s Chair, said: “Kathy Hochul assumed office under challenging circumstances, and has proven to be an effective executive. She is far and away the best candidate in this race to tackle the challenges our state faces, like addressing ethics in government, keeping New Yorkers safe, and protecting a woman’s right to choose. She stands in stark contrast to her opponent, who willingly participated in Donald Trump’s disinformation campaign trying to undermine the results of the 2020 Presidential election. It is imperative that New Yorkers defend our democratic values and vote for Kathy Hochul this fall.”

“In her short time as Governor, Kathy Hochul has proven to be an effective consensus builder, and taken steps to advance government ethics reforms that had no chance of moving forward under her predecessor,” said Betsy Gotbaum, Executive Director of Citizens Union. “While it is true that Governor Hochul has had her share of ethics issues, her opponent represents an imminent threat to our democracy. Lee Zeldin’s role in attempts to decertify the results of the 2020 Presidential election disqualifies him from earning Citizens Union’s support, and should disqualify him from holding any elected office.”

Citizens Union candidates based on the following criteria:

  • alignment with Citizens Union’s reform agenda, specifically views on ethics, election reform and police accountability;

  • ability to advance their agenda once in office;

  • knowledge of the needs of their constituents; and

  • ability to wage an effective and competitive campaign.

Earlier this week, Citizens Union announced endorsements of Mathylde Frontus for Assembly (AD 46, Brooklyn), and Iwen Chu (SD 17, Brooklyn) and Toby Ann Stavisky (SD 11, Queens) for State Senate. Additionally, the organization took positions on four ballot proposals – one statewide question and three citywide questions – urging a YES vote on all four.

Early Voting begins tomorrow, Saturday, October 29, and runs through Sunday, November 6. Election Day is Tuesday, November 8.
