The Reformer: September 2025

September 30, 2025 - Each fall, Citizens Union gathers to honor exceptional New Yorkers whose leadership and service has strengthened our city. This year’s Gotham Greats celebration will take place on October 22, and I am honored to carry forward this storied tradition as we mark 128 years of good government advocacy.

The Reformer: August 2025

August 2025 - As we fight to strengthen democracy in our city and state, it’s important we take the time to recognize and honor the leaders whose vision and dedication make our city stronger. And there’s no better place to do that than at our annual Gotham Greats celebration on Oct. 22.

The Reformer: July 2025

July 31, 2025 - After years of advocacy, research, and public testimony, the city took a huge step to boost participation in our low-turnout local elections. The 2025 Charter Revision Commission voted to put a transformative measure on the November ballot and ask New Yorkers to support holding our local elections at the same time as presidential contests to increase voter engagement.

The Reformer: June 2025

June 30, 2025 - What an incredible time to have joined Citizens Union. Last week’s Democratic primary showed just how far we’ve come – and how much work remains – to make our elections more fair and open.

The Reformer: January 2025

From our founding in 1897 to today, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to advancing democracy, holding government accountable, and ensuring ethical leadership at every level. This mission has never been more critical.

The Reformer: December 2025

December 31, 2024 - As the year comes to a close, I’m proud to reflect on some of the significant milestones we’ve reached together in 2024

Reformer: November 2024

The results of the 2024 presidential election have left many of us grappling with disappointment. As we face the reality of Donald Trump returning to the presidency, it’s clear we have serious challenges ahead. His rhetoric and actions threaten the foundations of our democracy. We remain steadfast in our mission to ensure New York leads by example.

The Reformer: September 2024

Reformer Sept 2024 - Like many of you, I was shocked to read the news that Mayor Adams has been indicted. These are truly unprecedented times for our city, as this is the first time a sitting mayor has been charged with a federal crime.

The Reformer: August 2024

This summer brings exciting news for Citizens Union as our Board Chair, Randy Mastro, was nominated to serve as corporation counsel for the City of New York. Randy’s dedication to integrity, fairness, and the rule of law has been a hallmark of his leadership at Citizens Union. I have no doubt he will bring the same commitment to his new role if given the opportunity to serve.

The Reformer: April 2024

April 30 - It was wonderful to see so many of you at our recent Civic Conversation as we talked trash with Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

The Reformer: November 2023

In November, New Yorkers exercised their right to vote in the 2023 general election. We are pleased to announce that all the candidates we endorsed have emerged victorious, and we look forward to collaborating with them to support Citizen Union’s agenda for good government reform at City Hall.

The Reformer: September 2023

September 28, 2023 - It was wonderful to see so many of you at our recent Civic Conversation. I want to thank Comptroller Tom DiNapoli for joining us. Tom is one of the most thoughtful, and nice people in government. I appreciate the insight he shared with us on a range of topics – from the impact of the migrant crisis on our budget to ethics to campaign finance reform. As always, John Avlon did a fantastic job facilitating an informative and engaging discussion. Also, a special thank you to King & Spalding for hosting and sponsoring the event.

The Reformer: August 2023

August 31, 2023 - Throughout July and August, we’ve kept busy. We came out in support of the appointment of a federal receiver to oversee New York City's jail system. Historically, Citizens Union has supported local control, but the unprecedented situation on Rikers Island requires a different kind of authority. We are pleased that Judge Swain is considering appointing a federal receiver and will continue to monitor the efforts to reform Rikers Island.
