New York, N.Y. (August 3, 2021) — Citizens Union released the following statement from Chair Randy Mastro and Executive Director Betsy Gotbaum in reaction to the findings of the Attorney General’s investigation into allegations against Governor Andrew Cuomo:

“Today is a very sad day for good government in New York. When Governor Andrew Cuomo found himself the target of multiple sexual harassment allegations earlier this year, he rightly referred the matter to New York’s Attorney General for investigation. “Attorney General Letitia James appointed experienced outside counsel to conduct the independent, professional investigation. The results were announced today, and they are damning.

“Instead of accepting the independent investigation's findings, the Governor is decrying it and vowing to remain in office. It therefore now falls to the State Legislature to do its duty and hold the Governor accountable for what this independent investigation found — namely, that Governor Cuomo sexually harassed current and former state employees in violation of both federal and state laws,” and even “retaliated” against one of his accusers. “It is a shame that it has come to this, but since the Governor refuses to do the right thing, the State Legislature must. It should immediately commence impeachment proceedings to remove him from office.”
