New York, N.Y. (January 30, 2023) — Citizens Union has issued to following statement from Board Chair Randy Mastro in response to the recent nomination process of a Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals:
“Citizens Union has long been a supporter of the constitutional process for appointing Court of Appeals Judges. The process is carefully designed to reflect both the balance of powers and the integrity of all three branches of government, and governs all proceedings to implement it. The State Constitution provides that “[t]he governor shall appoint” Court of Appeals Judges “with the advice and consent of the senate.” We believe that, consistent with that provision, nominees to the Court of Appeals should be voted upon by the full Senate. This is not about any particular nominee. It is about the process that should be followed as a matter of good government.”
