FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York, NY (February 14, 2025) – Citizens Union issues the following statement from Board Chair John Avlon in response to the resignation of former Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Danielle Sassoon and her letter detailing allegations against Mayor Eric Adams:

“The allegations by the acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Danielle Sassoon, that Mayor Eric Adams engaged in a ‘quid pro quo’ with the Trump administration to evade his upcoming trial on five counts of corruption – cannot be ignored by New York City and State leaders. The largest city government in the nation cannot allow longstanding public policy to be used as a bargaining chip in one man’s desperate pursuit of a get-out-of-jail-free card. This is “a breathtaking and dangerous precedent” – in the words of Ms. Sassoon – a corrupt assault on the rule of law that puts the mayor’s self-interest ahead of the public interest,” said John Avlon, Board Chair of Citizens Union.
