New York, N.Y. (September 26, 2024) – Citizens Union has issued the following statement in response to the indictment of New York City Mayor Eric Adams:
“The charges against Mayor Adams—alleging that he knowingly solicited illegal contributions, participated in a straw donor scheme, and accepted bribes to influence fire inspections—are troubling.”
“If a fraction of the allegations in this indictment are true, it would constitute a profound betrayal of the trust New Yorkers have placed in him. It would also mean that he directly misled Citizens Union during a candidate interview in the 2021 mayoral race, when he assured us that his campaign diligently followed campaign finance law. The conduct described in the indictment falls far short of the ethical standards expected of a public official.”
“We trust that the Southern District of New York is conducting a fair and thorough investigation and will follow the facts wherever they lead. Suggestions that this indictment is politically motivated are irresponsible and risk eroding public confidence in the process.”
“While Mayor Adams is entitled to the presumption of innocence, this investigation threatens his ability to govern effectively. If he cannot perform his duties and remain fully focused on the challenges facing New Yorkers, he should no longer serve as Mayor.”
Citizens Union Chair Randy Mastro recused himself from all discussions or involvement regarding this issue.
