New York, N.Y. (September 12, 2024) – Citizens Union has issued the following statement from Executive Director Betsy Gotbaum in response to the resignation of NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban:

“The resignation of the NYPD Commissioner is the right decision for the city. Public trust in the police department is paramount, and the next Commissioner must be someone who can restore and strengthen that trust by ensuring an honest, transparent, and accountable police force.”

“The next Commissioner must prioritize improving accountability, particularly in the realm of police discipline, which has deteriorated in recent years. This includes fully cooperating with the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), ensuring timely sharing of materials and documents, and not ignoring or bypassing their disciplinary recommendations through legal loopholes. Only through meaningful collaboration with oversight bodies and other stakeholders can the department begin to restore public confidence.”

“Citizens Union remains steadfast in advocating for a police department that is responsive to the needs of all New Yorkers. We urge Mayor Adams to select a Commissioner who is committed to implementing reforms, rebuilding public trust, and steering the NYPD toward a future of transparency and accountability.”
