New York, N.Y. (June 6, 2024) – Citizens Union releases the following statement from Executive Director Betsy Gotbaum following today’s first public meeting of the Charter Review Commission:
“Today’s poor attendance at the first public meeting of the Charter Review Commission is a reflection of the inappropriately quick process under which the Commission is working. It is not reasonable to expect members of the public to offer thoughtful input on the entire City Charter under such a rushed timeline.”
“As Citizens Union has previously stated, there is no way for a Charter Revision Commission to recruit professional staff, thoroughly review the Charter, seek meaningful public input, and draft proposals in two-months’ time.”
