New York, N.Y. (April 27, 2022) – Citizens Union releases the following statement from Executive Director Betsy Gotbaum in response to the NYS Court of Appeals ruling on the state’s redistricting maps:
“The State Legislature ignored the will of New Yorkers, who in 2014 voted to create an Independent Redistricting Commission and ban gerrymandering. The New York Court of Appeals has ruled the Legislature violated the 2014 amendment substantively and procedurally, by bypassing the Commission process and drawing highly partisan maps. It is unfortunate that the Legislature overstepped its authority, thus relinquishing its power over the redistricting process and handing it over to the courts.”
