New York, N.Y. (April 24, 2020)— Citizens Union has issued the following statement from Executive Director Betsy Gotbaum, applauding Governor Andrew Cuomo’s announcement of an executive order ordering the New York State Board of Elections to send a postage paid absentee ballot application to every registered voter in the state for the upcoming June primary election:

“We applaud Governor Cuomo’s announcement of an executive order that will see the Board of Elections mail an absentee ballot application with a postage paid return envelope to every registered voter in New York State. This action will go a long way to ensure that this coming June, New Yorkers aren’t asked to choose between their health and their vote.

“Ensuring that our 2020 elections can proceed without putting the public’s health at risk will require resources, creativity and flexibility. Today’s announcement is an important step. We look forward to continuing to engage with the Governor’s office, the Board of Elections and the Legislature to make it as easy and safe as possible for New Yorkers to vote this year.”
