Signed Declaration of Betsy Gotbaum Support of Plaintiff’s Motion for Summary Judgement in the Matter of Citizens Union of the City of New York against The Attorney General of the State of New York

In a declaration in support of Citizens Union’s Motion for Summary Judgment, Executive Director Betsy Gotbaum affirms that Citizens Union and Citizens Union Foundation are nonprofits dedicated to promoting good governance and transparency in New York.  She explains that they do not engage in partisan political activities and rely heavily on individual donors for funding.  She expresses concern about statutory provisions that would require donors to disclose their identity, arguing that it could expose their supporters to harassment and retaliation, particularly from political figures.  She notes that some donors have already expressed reluctance to contribute due to a fear of public association with the organization’s reform efforts.
