Citizens Union Report on City Council Advertisement Spending

This report discusses an analysis of CIty Council advertisement content and finds that “the great majority of them [are] … congratulatory and self-promotional, and arguably do not provide an important public benefit or serve the public interest other than to raise the profile of the council member.” CU recommends full disclosure of ads using taxpayer dollars, tightening bans on taxpayer funded ads that do not provide useful public service information, and adherence to the City Charter provisions regarding election year ads.
