Good Government Groups Call for New Transparency   For NY State Government

Use Information Technology to open NY State government

(ALBANY, New York) Today, leading civic groups called on the Governor, Legislature,  Attorney General and Comptroller to use the explosion in affordable Information  Technology to make NY State government more transparent, responsive and accountable.

The groups noted New York’s recent  “D” grade on a national “corruption risk” survey and  urged state leaders to move rapidly, noting, “Healthy, well­functioning democracies fully embrace transparency.”

Abundant, affordable Information Technology ‐‐‐ smartphones, iPads, apps, the Internet,  wifi, social networking, interactive mapping ‐‐‐ is transforming everyday life and work.  Government can use that technology ‐‐‐ and share its digital information ‐‐‐ will increase transparency, reduce corruption, improve public services, reduce costs and encourage innovation.

Highlights of recommendations from the New Transparency report:

Governor Cuomo: Create FOIL Center; issue order putting digital info online, adopt DOH  Metrix transparency principles across the executive branch, put budget data online in usable,  downloadable format. Fund upgraded Authorities Budget website. (PARIS reports.)

Majority Leader Skelos: Post online all records subject to FOIL per Senate Rules.  Speaker Silver: Webcast all meetings, including from 250 Broadway.

AG Schneiderman: Upgrade, relaunch Money & Influence site. (Was Sunlight.), Revamp  Charities site and integrate with Money and Influence site.

Comptroller DiNapoli: Upgrade already good OpenbookNY website. Improve pension transparency per CALPERS, put report data online in usable, downloadable, format.
