New York, N.Y. (March 12, 2020)— Citizens Union has issued the following statement from Executive Director Betsy Gotbaum in response to the State Supreme Court ruling the Public Campaign Financing and Election Commission unconstitutional:

“Citizens Union sincerely hopes that this ruling serves as the catalyst for the legislature to pass true campaign finance reform that empowers everyday New Yorkers, and addresses the culture of corruption in Albany. This should include including a robust matching funds program and measures to reduce the influence of big donors. The Commission’s weak recommendations would not have reached these goals, but rather would have preserved the status quo. We look forward to working with state legislators and our fellow good government advocates to pass meaningful reform, along the line we recommended in our December statement.”
